Proposed Projects

Eighteen liquefied natural gas proposals were proposed in northern BC in 2013/2014, making the scale of proposed development unprecedented. Since then, many projects have been cancelled due to market conditions and local concerns over siting. Some of the ongoing proposed projects are simply speculative, while others have cleared environmental assessments and obtained export licenses. In one case, LNG Canada, a final investment decision has been reached and the project is under construction.

Each of the proposals is operating independently from one another, meaning they each have (or had) separate environmental assessment deadlines, open houses, site locations and pipeline routes. This has made it very challenging for local residents to keep track and meaningfully engage with each proposal.
